Luxembourg's statistics portal STATEC today published the results of their 2013 inquiry on household budgets (EBM), showing a rise in expenditure on housing costs compared with 2012.
Housing costs hold the overwhelming majority in terms of consumption, followed by transport and food, and in 2013 the total expenditure on housing in Luxembourg rose to an average of €4,849 per household per month. In 2012, the same factors were reported as €4,761, demonstrating an increase of 1.9%.
In 2013, housing costs remained the largest expense, with households paying an average €1,709 a month on these costs, which represents 35.2% of monthly expenses. Transport held second position, accounting for €712 a month and 14.7% of household expenditure; with food representing the third largest expense at €420 and 8.7% of monthly expenditures. Education services were reported as bottom of the list, accounting for only 0.6% of monthly expenses.
The report also found that in 2013, households spent an average of €523, nearly 11%, of their total monthly expenditure abroad. Almost 25% of these expenses went toward hotels and restaurants, followed by 16% on clothing and footwear items. Three further forms of expense each represented 14% of this expenditure, these being furniture, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house; transport; and leisure and culture activities.
