On Thursday 9 January 2025, the City of Luxembourg inaugurated the work "Mir, Wir, Nous, Us" by Franco-Luxembourgish artist Florence Hoffmann as part of the BOX urban art project, at Place des Bains in Luxembourg city.
The work – a cement and metal sculpture almost 2m high – highlights the multiculturalism of the City of Luxembourg through the symbols of the five most widely practiced religions in the world: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism. The symbols are intertwined like links in a chain where each connecting element contributes to forming a solid unit. As a result, tensions exerted on one link can compromise the balance or integrity of the whole. The artist, who has made the human being one of his favorite themes, invites the public to question human cohesion and living together in the world and hopes to convey a message of tolerance and encourage understanding and mutual respect. The work can be discovered until spring 2025 at the Place des Bains.
Since 2018, the BOX urban art project has been installed every winter near the Badanstalt Aquatic Centre, between Boulevard Royal and Avenue Jean-Pierre Pescatore. Intended to protect the spherical fountain from winter weather, the wooden box installed around the fountain thus serves as a base for an ephemeral work of art. Every year, a different artist or collective of artists is selected to invest this space.
The BOX project is carried out by the Cultural Coordination in collaboration with the Hygiene Service of the City of Luxembourg.
