On Wednesday morning, the long-awaited statue of Melusina, the mermaid in the River Alzette, was unveiled on the banks of the river in Luxembourg-Grund across from the Abbaye de Neumunster.
The statue's artist, Serge Ecker, was present, as was a crowd of dignataries; Luxembourg city's mayor, Lydie Polfer, who addressed the audience and unveiled the statue.
Serge Ecker had won a contest in 2013 under the auspices of the 1050th anniversary of the city. 28 applications had been submitted from which 6 were retained on a long-list, then 3 on a short-list (Serge Ecker, Florence Hoffmann, Mai Thu Van); votes were cast by the public and by a jury, with Serge Ecker the outright winner.
The sculpture, in violet-coloured pyrogranite, is mounted on a concrete block under a willow tree in the shadow of the Bock promontory.
