Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Sport have reported that the Grand Duchy and Germany have agreed to ease border controls carried out in the context of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship (UEFA EURO 2024).

On Wednesday 19 June 2024, Luxembourg's Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, spoke again with his German counterpart Nancy Faeser about the traffic situation at the border crossings - in the interests of both Luxembourgers and cross-border workers. The ministries noted that the combination of high traffic volumes at peak times, occasional disruptions to traffic flow due to construction sites and tightened border controls as part of UEFA EURO 2024 in Germany has led to traffic jams and sometimes long waiting times for drivers in recent days.

"I understand the increased security measures because of the European Football Championship," stressed Minister Gloden. "However, the already difficult flow of traffic must not come to a standstill, especially not during rush hours when thousands of commuters want to cross the border. With this in mind, I have once again asked the Federal Minister of the Interior to implement border controls in the border areas in a moderate manner."

Regarding the practical implementation of border controls, a meeting took place on Wednesday between the Luxembourg Police Directorate and the Federal Police Directorate in Koblenz. They discussed changes to the traffic routing within the construction site on the A64 and minimising the consequences of the checkpoints on traffic flow.

The following measures apply with immediate effect: no checkpoints on the border bridges; two lanes in the construction site area on the A64 (Sauertal Bridge) to improve traffic flow.
