Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, paid a working visit to the United Kingdom on Thursday 11 May 2023.
In London, Minister Asselborn met with his British counterpart James Cleverly, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, for a bilateral interview. Discussions touched on bilateral relations and relations between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK), as well as the main European and international issues, including Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Minister Asselborn and Secretary of State Cleverly welcomed the "excellent" bilateral relations between Luxembourg and the UK, while discussing their development prospects. Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs noted that the two countries are linked by their "rich" shared history and are long-standing partners and allies with the same values of democracy and freedom.
The working meeting was also an opportunity to have an in-depth exchange of views on issues related to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. In this context, Minister Asselborn and Secretary of State Cleverly reaffirmed their "unfailing" support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.
They also discussed the close collaboration between Luxembourg and the UK within NATO, as well as UK-EU relations.
Following this working meeting, Minister Asselborn and Secretary of State Cleverly signed a joint declaration on bilateral cooperation between Luxembourg and the UK. This joint statement aims to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the areas of foreign policy, security and defence, human rights, economy and finance, climate change and energy, as well as mobility and migration.
Minister Asselborn welcomed the signing of this joint declaration, which will make it possible "to further deepen the excellent relations between Luxembourg and the United Kingdom", thanks in particular to the annual strategic dialogue established by this declaration.
