On Wednesday 14 December 2022, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel participated in the EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit in Brussels.

This summit commemorated 45 years of EU-ASEAN partnership and was co-chaired by European Council President Charles Michel and current ASEAN President, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen.

Discussions between Heads of State and Government took place in plenary format and focused on geopolitical (international and regional security challenges), economic (connectivity, trade and sustainable supply chains) and sustainable transition (green and digital transitions, food security and protection of natural resources) issues.

During the exchanges, Luxembourg's Prime Minister highlighted that "this summit represents a great opportunity for ASEAN [the Association of Southeast Asian Nations] and the EU [European Union] to demonstrate a joint political determination to address the multiple regional and global challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the climate emergency, but also to demonstrate our commitment to international law, multilateralism and the recognised values and norms anchored in the Charter of the United Nations".

The leaders present adopted a joint EU-ASEAN statement covering all the topics for discussion at the summit.

The EU-ASEAN Commemorative Summit concluded with a dinner hosted by the President of the European Council.
