In light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, Chronicle.lu reached out to Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs to ask about the number of Luxembourg nationals and / or non-national residents who may be present currently in Ukraine or Russia.

Chronicle.lu requested information regarding the number of such individuals who remain in one of these countries and what the Luxembourg authorities are doing to help and / or repatriate them, if needed.

In response, a spokesperson for Luxembourg's Foreign Ministry noted that the ministry is currently aware of the presence of one Luxembourg national in Ukraine. The Embassy of Luxembourg in Prague (Czech Republic), which is co-accredited in Ukraine, is in contact with the individual and his / her family who have decided to remain there for the present.

Regarding Russia, the ministry spokesperson recalled that Luxembourg nationals and residents living in Russia currently still have the possibility to travel by their own means as commercial flights are still operating and travel by train or car remain possible.

According to the ministry, Luxembourg nationals living in Ukraine and persons of Ukrainian or third-country nationality have fled the war by their own means. However, the consular assistance service of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs as well as the Luxembourg Embassy in Prague and other Luxembourg embassies in neighbouring countries have been in touch with many nationals who have requested their assistance.

Following the recent news of the expulsion of a Russian diplomat from Luxembourg, Chronicle.lu also asked the Foreign Ministry to confirm whether or not Luxembourg had shut its embassy in Moscow. The ministry spokesperson confirmed that the Luxembourg Embassy in Moscow and its diplomats on site continue to carry out their activities at present.
