On Thursday 19 and Friday 20 June 2025, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, paid a working visit to Madrid, Spain.
According to Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, the visit provided an opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares Bueno, and to participate in the official reception organised by the Luxembourg Embassy to mark the national holiday.
The meeting between the Luxembourg and Spanish ministers provided an opportunity to take stock of bilateral relations and discuss current political developments. Minister Bettel highlighted the economic, social and cultural ties between Luxembourg and Spain. The ministry noted that the many high-level visits over the past few months demonstrate the desire to further strengthen the various areas of cooperation.
The working meeting also provided an opportunity for an in-depth exchange of views on current political issues, including European issues, preparations for the NATO summit, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
Regarding the latter, Minister Bettel warned of the negative consequences of Israel's attacks on Iranian nuclear and civilian infrastructure, as well as Iranian attacks on Israeli civilian targets.
During his speech at the official reception, Minister Bettel highlighted the “excellent” relations between Spain and Luxembourg, emphasising the long-standing bonds of friendship and the successful integration of Spanish residents in Luxembourg and vice versa.
