After a one-year delay, the World Expo 2020 in Dubai opened its doors to the public on Friday; like in Shanghai in 2010, Luxembourg is once again present at the world fair.
Under the category “Opportunity”, the Grand Duchy is showcasing, primarily through digital mediums, the diversity of the country, its pioneering role in sustainable finance, its holistic approach and expertise in circular economy and its entrepreneurial spirit.
According to Milena Campagna, a photographer from the Grand Duchy who is currently at the Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, "the commitment to development as well as the prioritising of gender equality in Luxembourg’s development cooperation doesn’t fall short".
Under the categories “Where Ideas Start to Fly”, “Transforming Our World into a Better Place” and “A Constant Forerunner and Innovator”, the Grand Duchy sets the tone for the rest of the exhibition. A concrete example of Luxembourg’s many projects is also presented, in the form of a mobile satellite-based infrastructure. Through Emergency.lu, a public-private partnership between the government and three Luxembourg companies (SES, HITEC Luxembourg and Luxembourg Air Ambulance), the Grand Duchy supports international relief efforts when disaster strikes. The device can be set up by first responders anywhere in the world within 24 hours, thus enabling the rapid coordination of relief operations.
Once they get to the top floor, visitors to the Luxembourg Pavilion can make their way down again on a slide.
The “Schengen Lounge” restaurant, under the direction of Michelin-starred chef Kim Kevin de Dood, offers a range of typical Luxembourgish dishes, ranging from Gromperekichelcher (potato pancakes) and Kniddelen (dumplings) to Quetschentaart (fruit tart) and Verwurelter (donuts). A gift shop also offers a range of Luxembourgish products, such as stamps and miniature pavilion models.
