On Thursday 11 March 2021, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, had a video conference meeting with his Thai counterpart, Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai.
The two foreign ministers welcomed the strong friendship that has united theit countries' peoples for many years. They discussed the prospects for developing bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of green and sustainable finance and financial technology.
The ministers took stock of the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and emphasised the importance of promoting multilateral cooperation to overcome this global challenge.
The foreign ministers also took stock of the situation in Myanmar, following the military coup of 1 February 2021, which Minister Jean Asselborn condemned in the strongest terms. Luxembourg's Foreign Minister stressed that this coup d'etat is an unacceptable attempt to overturn by force the result of the last general elections, which reflect the will of the Burmese people, and thus to put an end to the democratic transition in the country and the sharing of power between civilians and soldiersn. Minister Don Pramudwinai informed his Luxembourg counterpart of the ongoing mediation efforts by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its regional partners for a return to democracy, respect for human rights and good governance in Myanmar.
During the exchange, Minister Jean Asselborn expressed his concern and that of the European Union (EU) over the growing use in Thailand of repression against young demonstrators and their pre-trial detention for having used their right to freedom of expression.
