Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs announced that the Grand Duchy has oficially become an associate observer member of the Ibero-American Conference.
The decision was taken unanimously by foreign ministers of the Ibero-American Conference on behalf of their heads of state and government during a meeting at the end of November. The Ibero-American Secretary-General, Rebeca Grynspan, transmitted the official notification to Luxembourg's Foreign Ministry on Friday 18 December 2020.
On behalf of Luxembourg, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, expressed his gratitude to the member states of the Ibero-American Conference for their support and confidence.
Founded in 1991, the Ibero-American Conference brings together the 22 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries of Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean: the three countries of the Iberian Peninsula (Andorra, Spain, Portugal) as well as nineteen Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela).
By becoming an associate observer member, Luxembourg will be able to strengthen its links with the Ibero-American Conference and intensify its diplomatic, political, economic, social and cultural relations with all its member states.
The Ibero-American Conference defends the values of democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms and promotes peace, security and justice, the rule of law, solidarity and sustainable development. The next summit meeting of heads of state and government is scheduled for April 2021 in the Principality of Andorra, the country which currently holds the presidency of the Ibero-American Conference.
