Further details have emerged concerning yesterday's fatal incident in Trier when a car was driven through the pedestrianised shopping zone.

Five people are confirmed dead, including a nine-week-old girl and her 45 year-old father, as well as three women aged 25, 52 and 73. All victims were from Trier. State interior minister Roger Lewentz said that, of the 15 people injured, four are understood to be in a life-threatening condition, while five are seriously hurt and six suffered less severe injuries.

The state's interior minister said the 51 year-old driver, who was arrested by police at the scene after driving for around 1km in the pedestrian zone, had apparently intentionally driven at people by zig-zagging as he drive along the streets.

Prosecutor Peter Fritzen said the suspect had no fixed address and had recently been living in the vehicle, understood to be a Land Rover, which he had borrowed from a friend. He also said that the suspect was drunk and may have had a mental illness.

Trier has a population of about 110,000 and is 13km from Wasserbillig in Luxembourg.
