This afternoon, Tuesday 1 December 2020, a car was driven into a crowd of people in the centre of Trier, across the border in Germany.

Initial reports are that four people have been killed, including one young girl, with around 30 people injured, including some children.

The incident happened at around 14:00 today in the pedestrian zone. The driver is understood to have travelled along Brotstrasse, with the incidents happening along a 1km stretch including in front of the C&A store.

The German police have arrested a suspect who is understood to have driven a grey SUV which the police rammed. He is described as 51 years of age and of German nationality and is understood to live in the vicinity.

The police are questioning the suspect and are understood to be searching for a motive for the man's actions.

The city centre of Trier remains cordoned off with residents told to remain indoors. Parents of schoolchildren were asked to collect them from school rather than expecting the children to walk home alone.

Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, posted on social media "I am deeply appalled and dismayed at the terrible news from Trier. My thoughts are with the victims and the numerous injured and their families. In this difficult moment, Luxembourg stands firmly by the side of our neighbours and friends."
