Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, along with several other EU ministers responsible for international trade, co-signed a letter addressed to the European Commission, calling for the greater promotion of gender equality in trade policy.
Minister Jean Asselborn and his European counterparts sent the letter on 6 November 2020 to Executive Vice-President and European Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis, inviting the European Commission to take measures to ensure that EU trade policy contributes to the promotion of women's rights.
The signatories of the letter pursue the following objectives:
- ensure that trade policy provides opportunities for women leaders and entrepreneurs;
- promote decent and equal working conditions between the sexes;
- increase the influence of women in the negotiation and implementation of free trade agreements.
Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn's support in this matter forms part of the feminist foreign policy implemented by the Luxembourg government, which aims to promote gender equality in international and European forums and better participation of women at all levels of responsibility.
