Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, yesterday travelled to New Delhi in India for a two-day official visit.
On Monday, the first day of this visit, Jean Asselborn visited the Raj Ghat memorial to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the 150th anniversary of his birth. He was accompanied on this occasion by the memorial's director, K.P. Singh.
Minister Asselborn also met the honorary consuls of Luxembourg in Mumbai and Calcutta, as well as those appointed in Chennai, Bangalore and Bangladesh to take stock of the development of bilateral, economic, financial and cultural relations.
Today, on the second day of his official visit, Jean Asselborn met with India's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, for a bilateral interview, followed by a working breakfast. The ministers began by praising the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, discussing in depth the diplomatic, financial, economic and commercial ties that unite them. They went on to discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation in areas of common interest, in particular in the area of investments, green and sustainable finance, digitalisation and space.
In addition, the meeting saw the ministers address international political affairs, particularly regarding the regional situation in South Asia, as well as on India's relations with neighbouring countries. They then took stock of relations between India and the European Union, stressing the mutually beneficial advantages of this partnership based on the values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law and respect for human rights, especially in the fields of security, multilateral cooperation, trade and investment. They also examined good cooperation within various multilateral institutions, in particular within the United Nations.
During his stay in New Delhi, Minister Asselborn also delivered a speech at a conference organised by the Embassy with the India International Centre, the Jean Monnet centre of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Confederation of Young Leaders.
