The 14th Berlin Security Conference was opened today with initial remarks from Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn.
As one of the key annual events on European security policy, the Conference brings together more than 100 representatives of fifty countries to discuss the fight against terrorism and the future of European and transatlantic defence.
After opening the conference, Minister Asselborn participated in a roundtable concerning 'The New Challenges - How to Re-Estalish Confidence as Security Partners' alongside former Minister of Defence, Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Michèle Alliot-Maris, and the Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO, Alexander V. Grushko.
The roundtable was hosted by German journalist Werner Sonne, with discussions designed to take stock of the security situation in Europe following the attacks in Paris of 13 November 2015. Participants also spoke of the situation in Syria as well as the role of different stakeholders.
"I hope that the assassinations in Prias have once again made clear, that we can jointly preserve and defend security and stability in Europe," stated Minister Asselborn in his speech. "May the dramatic events in Paris and the deaths of so many innocent people bring us together anew, may we reflect on our commonalities, on the strong and universal values that unite us. Our values of humanity, freedom and human rights are the best bulwark against any kind of terror, violence and barbarism".
