In conjunction with the seventieth anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter at which he delivered a speech, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, conducted a bilateral meeting with President of the UN General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, during which the President of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform was revealed.
During the meeting, Mogens Lykketoft informed Minister Asselborn of his decision to appoint Ambassador Sylvie Lucas, Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations in New York, as President of Intergovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform. On behalf of the Luxembourg Government, the Minister welcomed the decision made.
"Ambassador Lucas, through his UN experience, including as Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the Security Council during the 2013-2014 term, is perfectly prepared to work on this complex issue," commented Jean Asselborn. "This appointment is an honour for the Grand Duchy and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the United Nations".
The Minister then assured the President of the General Assembly of Luxembourg's full commitment to the reform of the Security Council and the Ambassador confirmed that Lucas would work independently to bring the Member States towards an agreement on a more representative, transparent and open Council, able to meet the challenges of peace and international security in the 21st century.
