At the invitation of German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Minister, of Foreign and European Affairs, Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Jean Asselborn, was in Berlin yesterday to discuss current international political issues.
Topics discussed included the situation in Syria and Libya and the European response to the migration crisis.
Minister Asselborn also used the opportunity to visit the Bundestag to meet with the parliamentary group of German Social Democrats (SPD). In his capacity as Chairman of the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council of the European Union, the Minister made an inventory of efforts to manage the refugee crisis, whilst providing an overview of international politics.
In a letter to President of the EU Council, Donald Tusk, released on Monday, Minister Asselborn outlined each migration action, which included the relocation of 160,000 refugees across Member States; the designation of certain non-member countries as safe countries of origin; discussions on EU return and readmission policy; as well as forthcoming Commission proposals on existing European information systems and technological solutions.
