President Obama today announced David McKean as nominee for the role of U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, with the nomination to be sent to the U.S. Senate for confirmation.

David McKean has held his current role as Director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Department of State since 2013, having previously served as Senior Advisor for the implementation of the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review at the Department of State and as as Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Intrenational Center for Scholars.

From 1999 to 2008, he worked as Cheif of Staff to Senator John F. Kerry; from 2009 to 2010 he was Staff Director for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee; and from 2010 to 2011, he worked as CEO of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation in Boston.

Mr. McKean has also served as Minority Staff Director for the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations from 1997 to 1998 and Special Counsel for the Commidities Futures Trading Commission from 1995 to 1997, following his position as Chief of Staff to Congressman Jospeh P. Kennedy from 1994 to 1995. and Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator John F. Kerry from 1987 to 1992.

David McKean received an A.B. from Harvard College, a J.D. from Duke University and an M.A. from Tufts University, and is also the recipient of a Distinguished Honour Award.

He is the author of three books on American political history, including 'Friends in High Places', co-authored with Douglas Frantz; 'Tommy the Cork', praised as one of the 'Best Books of 2004' by Washington Post; and 'The Great Decision', co-authored with Cliff Sloan and a History Book Club 'Best Books of 2009'.
