Details:

The Luxembourg chapter of Europe Must Act, a European social movement calling for a humane migration policy, is organising an awareness-raising event about the humanitarian crisis in Greek refugee camps on Friday 28 August 2020, from 15:00 to 18:00 at Place Clairefontaine.

This Friday, Europe Must Act Luxembourg is organising an "Action Day", in partnership with the non-profit organisation Passerell, to raise awareness among the population of Luxembourg about the humanitarian crisis in the camps on the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea and to ask Luxembourg to pledge to relocate and welcome as many as possible of the 30,000 asylum seekers and refugees in these camps.

In March, the movement launched an open letter that gathered 100,000 signatures, including 160 NGOs and ten MEPs, which resulted in a meeting between a campaign delegation and the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson. Europe Must Act has since launched a new campaign, "Cities Must Act", which calls on mayors and local councillors to pledge to welcome asylum seekers and refugees from the Aegean Islands in their city or local area.

The Action Day supplements the petition, which forms part of this campaign, launched by Europe Must Act Luxembourg, and will see the construction of a socially distanced human chain using participants and banners with quotes from refugees and asylum seekers to send a message of solidarity to the people in these camps.

The movement has called on Luxembourg to join this initiative, as other European cities such as Berlin and Ghent have already done, and to offer a safe haven and security to those living in the camps on the Aegean Islands.
