Details: Popcorn is the symbol of blockbuster cinema, of entertainment and escape. Ciné Utopia and the University of Luxembourg have teamed up again to organise another Pop(corn) Culture cycle of films.
The Pop(corn) Culture film cycle captures popular culture (pop culture) as an object of research. At the same time, it wants to take university research out of its ivory tower and make it more accessible.
The result of an interdisciplinary course of the Bachelor of European Cultures (BCE), this series of films is based on the idea that we are all constantly exposed to images and objects from mass culture. Instead of passively consuming, we can examine the values they convey. We can decode them. This year, discussions will focus on the notion of in-between: how to live between two worlds, between two eras, between two ways of being? What cultural values and social norms are highlighted or subverted by the film?
The film series is open to the public. Following screenings (all at 18:30), the films are discussed by the audience and is moderated by Agnes Prüm and Sonja Kmec of the University of Luxembourg, together with their guest(s) on the evening.
In inviting the University to the cinema, Pop(corn) Culture blurs the boundaries between "high culture" and "popular culture". The discussions (in English, French & German) will be very open, mixing deep analysis with spontaneous observations and associations. From very different disciplines, guests can discover unsuspected aspects and (re)view films with new eyes.
