Details:

On the occasion of the centenary of the Grand Duchy's 1919 double referendum, an official commemorative ceremony will be taking place this Saturday 28 September 2019 at 19:00 at Cercle Cité in Luxembourg-ville.

On 28 September 1919, Luxembourgers voted on the economic orientation of the country following the First World War. Voters responded to questions on their preferred head of state and whether they would rather have an economic union with France or with Belgium. The majority ultimately voted to maintain the monarchy (rather than become a republic) under Grand Duchess Charlotte (77.8%) and for an economic union with France (73%).

The ceremony will be held in the presence of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Luxembourg as well as members of the Chamber of Deputies, the Government, the Cabinet and the judiciary, the municipal council of the Ville de Luxembourg and the diplomatic corps accredited to the Luxembourg Head of State. The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Fernand Etgen, and Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, will deliver speeches on this occasion.

The ceremony will be followed by a gala concert by the Luxembourg Military Band, under the direction of Lieutenant colonel Jean-Claude Braun. The musical programme features: Ernie Hammes' "Regiis Ostium", commissioned by the Ministries of State and of Culture for the 2019 National Day official ceremony at the Philharmonie; music adapted by Lieutenant colonels André Reichling and Jean-Claude Braun (Luxembourg Military Band) for this year's National Day fireworks; "Keen on Queen", a medley of the best Queen songs, arranged by Jörg Murschinski; Oscar Navarro's "Paconchita".
