Details: On Tuesday 12 April 2016, the Institut Pierre Werner and the University of Luxembourg will be holding a conference dedicated to conflicting feelings towards the European Union (EU), featuring Professor Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht and German scholar and historian Dr. Henning Marmulla.

Entitled 'What kind of nationalism does the European Union need?' ('De quel nationalisme l'Union Européenne a-t-elle besoin?'), the conference will look at how issues such as the migration flux, the finanical crisis and the growing threat of terrorism have all contributed to a growing division within the EU. Whilst some criticise the Union and deem it the 'superfluous Brussels monster', others perceive it as a political and economic necessity, creating an area of tension between European citizens who recognise and reject it. The feeling of belonging to a united Europe is rarely expressed, begging the question of what it is that is thwarting the development of a common European identity.

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht will examine how the conflicting convictions have arisen and whether they may be explained by the repression of all forms of nationalism in the wake of the Second World War, depriving European citizens of an essentially positive point of reference, an as of yet undetermined 'European nationalism'. After putting forward these questions, Professor Gumbrecht, who has been teaching comparative literature at the University of Stanford (California) since 1989, will be joined by Dr. Henning Marmulla to exchange views on the possible answers. The latter has authored and co-edited several books, and has been engaged in research at the University of Luxembourg on literary censorship in the nineteenth century since 2015.
