Details: On Tuesday 19 January 2016, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxembourg will be holding a conference on Financial Technologies and Services (FinTech) Research & Development.

Financial markets are faced with major shifts and upheavals around the world, with the work processes, products and services of banks and investment funds undergoing massive upheavals through information and communications technology. Security, reliability and trust therefore become of extreme significance.

The FinTech R&D Conference being held next Tuesday runs parallel with the Luxembourg government's efforts to increase private and public partnerships in the FinTech sector between the financial industry and Luxembourg research centres.

"Luxembourg has decided to develpp a secure ecosystem where data protection and security are critical building blocks, positioning the Grand-Duchy as a major trusted data hub," stated Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, who will present the government's strategy for developing FinTech in the Grand Duchy in his opening remarks at the conference. "FinTech, cybersecurity and Big Data are at the heart of our economic diversification strategy in the field of ICT."

Marc Schiltz, Executive Head of the National Research Fund (FNR), will also be in attendance to share the FNR's research priorities for 2016 which will bring Luxembourg's strategy on FinTech into focus.

"Together with the Ministry of the Economy, we are currently planning to transfer a part of our funding efforts into FinTech," commented Schiltz. "We will announce specific targeted FinTech funding opportunities in the near future and more specifically with private companies in proactive R&D partnerships with our Luxembourgish research institutions."

"Building on our successful experience working with partners in Luxembourg and internationally, the SnT will continue to play an instrumental role in creating a self-sustaining FinTech innovation system in the Grand Duchy, including through an interdiscplinary 'FinTech Lab' being set up in early 2016," SnT's Director Professor Björn Ottersten said of the Centre's optimal position for this process.

Morning sessions will feature keynote speeches from Dr. Garrick Hileman, Economist at the London School of Economics, who will talk about how Blockchain Technology will transform financial services; Philippe Gelis, Co-Founder and CEO of Kantox, who will describe disruption in FinTech; and Mali Marafini, CEO of Interruptive who will address the future of FinTech banking. SnT scientists will later interactively present various R&D approaches such as Compliant and Secure Data Management in FinTech; Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies; Data Analytics, Big Data and Mobile Security; and Innovative Solutions in FinTech Security & Privacy.
