'Mediterranea' will be the last of three films to be screened as part of Lux Film Days of the Luxembourg Information Office of the European Parliament on Thursday 19 November 2015.
These three films, two of which were made in France, were subtitled in the 24 official languages of the European Union and distributed in over 50 cities and 20 festivals, ready to be discovered by an array of Europeans.
The initiative was organised in cooperation with the Institut Pierre Werner and the CinEast Festival, and aims to highlight the complexity of a European identity. With the event, the European Parliament also hopes to represent the reality of European successes and challenges. Very few European films receive the chance to be translated and to be presented to the audience to which they were dedicated. The Lux Prize, thanks to subtitles, allows these films and their makers to overcome language barriers and reach more citizens.
The final film, 'Mediterranea', will be showcased at 19:30 tomorrow evening at Ciné Utopia. The film by Jonas Carpignano follows the story of Ayiva, who recently left Burkina Faso in order to provide for his sister and daughter. Taking advantage of a smuggling operation to leave the continent with best friend Abas, Ayiva adapts quickly to life in Italy, but when tensions arise within the local community his situation suddenly becomes precarious and his new life comes at a price.
This screening, which is free of charge, will be followed by a debate on the theme of immigration in Europe in the presencee of MEP Claude Turmes and Nathalie Medernach, in charge of public relations for the Luxembourg Office for Reception and Integration (OLAI).
The previous two films, 'Mustang' by Deniz Gamze Ergüven and 'Urok (The Lesson)' by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, were watched by 170 and 140 avid viewers, respectively.
Viewers from all around Europe will also have a chance to participate by voting for one of the three films in competition. The winner will receive the Audience Mention Award for the 2015 LUX Film Prize. Additionally, one of the voters will be chosen at random and rewarded with an invitation to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2016 to personally announce the Audience Mention winner. Last year's winner of the LUX Film Prize was 'Ida' by Pawel Pawlikowski.
