On 26 and 27 November 2015, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will be holding its annual Civil Society Media Seminar in Luxembourg to examine the challenges linked to communicating European development policy.

Development policy can be regarded as an investment of sorts, investing in the future of both developing and developed countries by contributing to the reduction of poverty in the world and ensuring sustainable economic, social and environmental development and promoting democracy, the rule of law, good governance and the respect of human rights.

As development policy cannot be left to individual States or to EU institutions alone and requires the support of all civil sociey actors and citizens, the seminar will aim to show how effective communication tools and strategies are needed in securing this public support.

The seminar will include three panels, these being the achievements of the current European Year for Development and the most successful communication tools; the role of civil society and media in communicating development policy; and the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the role of the EU effectively communicating these goals.

Speakers will include Klaus Rudischhauser, deputy Director-General of DG Europeaid at the European Commission; Marius Wanders for NGO World Vision and Civil Society Ambassador to the EYD2015; Andris Gobiņš, former EESC member and one of the main advocators of EYD2015; Simone Pott, spokesperson of Welthungerhilfe; Jakob Dall, Danish photojournalist; Eliza Anyangwe, journalist at the Guardian; Romain Schneider, Luxembourg Minister for Cooperation and Humanitarian Action; Stefania Campogianni, Senior Communications Officer at WWF; Marcia Poole, Director of Communication at the ILO; Joachim Beijmo, Director of Communication at the Swedish Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA); Charles Goerens, MEP member of the EP Development Committee.
