On Wednesday 18 November 2015, several personalities renowned in the world of literature and theatre will assemble at the Abbaye de Neumünster to explore the friendship between Austrian novelist and playwright Stefan Zweig and French writer Romain Rolland.
The event, organised by the Institut Pierre Wener (IPW), will look at the correspondence between the two literary figures, which began in 1910 and continued until the death of Zweig in 1942. As French and German soldiers battled in the trenches, this correspondence united the Austrian and the Frenchman in friendship, and follows the path of Stefan Zweig, under the influence of the older Rolland, towards pacifism.
These unique documents shed a poignant light on the tragic events around World War I, providing a source of reflection which is just as relevant for present day. Actors Marc Baum and Joël Delsaut will present extracts from the correspondence, whilst the letters will be commented upon by Klemens Renoldner, Director of the Stefan-Zweig Centre of the University of Salzburg, and Jacques Le Rider, Germanist, French histroian and Mitteleuropa specialist.
The event has been organised by the IPW with the support of the Franco-German Cultural Fund, the French Institute, the French Institute of Luxembourg, the Austrian Embassy in Luxembourg and neimënster and will by moderated by Franck Colotte, professor and literary journalist.
