Friday 27 November 2015 will mark the opening of an exhibition at the Abbaye de Neumünster exploring the lives of 'sworn virgins' in Northern Albania.
The exhibition, organised by neimënster and the Institut Pierre Werner (IPW), is comprised of photographs by artists Pepa Hristova who visited this Northern Albanias in order to visually document the women of this Balkan society who take a vow of chastity and embody the role of men.
The sworn virgins practice is a law dating back to the Middle Ages which has been orally transmitted and which allows families in this patriarchal society who have lost their male leader to designate a female relative to replace this male figure and make an irrevocable vow of chastity. Swearing to remain chaste forever, these virgins receive the status of men and socially embody them, doing male work and dressing ad behaving like men. The sworn virgins fulfil their role so perfectly that over time, outside of their family circle, they are no longer seen as women.
At the opening, photographer Pepa Hristova will offer an introductory lecture of her work with a film projection on the creation of her works. The artist was born in 1977 in Bulgaria and now lives in Hamburg. She studied visual communication and photography more specifically at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and has since won the Otto-Steiner Prize and the Talents Preis of C/O Berlin. Her work has also been shown at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, C/O Berlin and the Berlin Academy of Arts.
The exhibition opening will take place at 18:30 on Friday 27 November 2015 at the Cloister Lucien Wercollier of the Abbaye de Neumünster, and from then on will be open from 11:00 to 18:00 every day between Saturday 28 November 2015 and Sunday 10 January 2016, except for between 24 December 2015 and 3 January 2016.
