Details: The Communes of Kayl and Tétange have announced that the Percussionists Ensemble from the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (OPL), along with a trio of pianists, will perform a concert at the Schungfabrik cultural centre in Tétange on Sunday 19 October at 20:00.
On the programme for the soirée are most notably Gabriel Fauré’s Trio for piano, violin and cello op. 120 and Dimitri Chostakovitch’s Sympony No. 15 op. 141 for piano trio and thirteen percussion instruments.
The former is a late work from Fauré, which he struggled to finish before his death. Despite this, it became a great hit amongst music lovers and is even considered by some to the major composition of its kind from the period (early 1920s). It is a three-part work, consisting of an allegro ma non troppo, andantino and finale allegro vivo.
The latter is a four-part symphony from the early 1970s featuring allegretto, adagio largo (attacca), allegretto again and an adagio allegretto to finish. Chostakovitch was seriously ill when he began composing it, so it exudes a sense of nearing the end of life, combining the composer’s own style with passages that resemble the works of Gioacchino Rossini and Richard Wagner.
The original instrumentation of the symphony is percussion-heavy with the wind and string parts more resembling a chamber orchestra group. Fellow Russian composer, Viktor Daravianko therefore took the idea further, transcribing the symphony for a chamber orchestra, which was played for the first time in Moscow in 1972, with Chostakovitch’s consent.
Despite being frequently unimpressed with transcriptions, modern-day critics find that the chamber orchestra version with a percussionist significantly reinforces the general motif of the work – personal, private confessions from with composer’s soul.
The full programme also includes Steve Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood and John Cage and Lou Harrison’s Double Music for percussion quartet.
The OPL Percussion Ensemble includes: Béatrice Daudin, Klaus Bettschneider, Benjamin Schäfer and Simon Stierle. The Piano Trio is formed by Haoxing Liang on the violin, Se Hee Kim on the cello and Jessica Chan on piano.
