Details: Maskenada has announced the production of a play in English, "IT FELT EMPTY WHEN THE HEART WENT AT FIRST BUT IT IS ALRIGHT NOW", which is directed by Rafael Kohn, with Larisa Faber as Dijana and Jacqueline Acheampong as Gloria; Music by Serge Tonnar; Make Up and Costumes by Joël Seiller; Visuals by Misch Feinen; Production Management by Dani Jung.
How much is a life worth? The production is described as a site‐specific production of Kirkwood's seminal play on consumerism and modern‐day slave trade.
The play is being performed with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Ville de Luxembourg, Oeuvre Nationale de Secours Grande‐Duchesse Charlotte, Fondation Indépendance, Miami University, Delano Magazine and RTL at the HAMILIUS UNDERGROUND PASSAGEWAY in Luxembourg City on 22, 24, 29, 31 OCTOBER at 20:00, on 26 OCTOBER at 17:00, and 1, 5, 6, 7 NOVEMBER at 20:00, and 9 NOVEMBER at 17:00.
ABOUT THE PLAY
Dijana Polancec had it all mapped out: work hard, save harder, buy that ticket to England and live in the land of plenty. Then she met Babac and thought she had hit it big time ‐ boyfriend, baby, home in London, George Foreman grilling machine. iPhone. With apps. As Dijana goes from perpetrator to victim, from consumer to consumed goods, her life starts to take a turn she would have never envisaged.
it felt empty... takes us on a journey through Dijana's dreams and nightmares. Her path crosses with Gloria's, a feisty Nigerian battling a downward spiral of her own. The play pieces together the stories of these two women, cutting back and forth in time, to unravel a deeply human fight for a utopic life filled with opportunities.
Award‐winning playwright Lucy Kirkwood spent months researching the topic of sex traffic and talking to victims of human trade. The play deals with the subject through two multi‐faceted characters, both of them part of and exploited by a system which eventually grinds their dreams to dust. The play was commissioned by Clean Break, a theatre company set up in 1979 by two women prisoners, offering both a voice and training programmes to female offenders. The style of the piece is reminiscent of an internal monologue, with very colloquial language infused with a pragmatic, dry humour, which characterizes the piece throughout.
Following its acclaimed London premiere, MASKéNADA takes on Kirkwood's play in a site‐specific setting, aiming to immerse the audience into Dijana's and Gloria's world altogether.
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
MASKéNADA is taking this chilling play in its first English speaking production outside of the U.K. to Luxembourg City.
In keeping with the collective's innovative approach to theatre making, the play will be presented in a site‐specific production in the capital's iconic Hamilius underground passageway. Traditionally a melting pot for subcultures, the subway's various spaces, framed by ceiling to floor glass panels, and standing currently empty, will feature as the various settings through which the audience will, at moments, observe the two trapped women, then again be with them inside their own glass cage.
The production's minimalistic approach will showcase Dijana and Gloria's journey through stark sensatory and visual features, immersing them in the space and enhanced by a tailored sound design.
This production will be MASKèNADA's first in English, aiming to attract new audiences to the collective's varied base. The play's central theme being of acute relevance in our society, with reports of trafficked girls emerging in Luxembourg over the past weeks, MASKéNADA aims to engage a discussion with audiences and various organisations.
Furthermore, we are aiming to showcase the work abroad, establishing and strengthening links with partners in our neighbouring countries.
