The celebration commemorates the events of the novel, which follows the lives of Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus and Molly Bloom over the course of a single day in Dublin, Ireland on 16 June 1904. Today, Bloomsday is marked around the world through various literary events.
James Joyce (1882 to 1941) is regarded as one of Ireland's most influential writers and a leading figure of literary modernism. First published in 1922, Ulysses is widely considered one of the most significant novels of the 20th century and continues to be studied and translated worldwide. Modern Bloomsday celebrations date back to 1954, when admirers of the writer retraced the route taken by the novel's characters through Dublin, establishing a tradition that continues more than 70 years later.
