The number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM employment agency in Luxembourg has increased by 33.6% over one year.

As of 31 May 2020, the number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 20,209. Over one year, this represents an increase of 5,085 individuals, or 33.6%. This increase was mainly due to a drop in outflows, rather than an increase in new registrations. In fact, during the month of May 2020, the ADEM looked at 1,678 new resident jobseekers' applications - a decrease of 18.3% compared to May 2019. At the same time, the number of closed applications fell from 2,484 to 1,230 over one year.

In addition, the ADEM, which was no longer able to accommodate jobseekers in person last month, had to adapt the monitoring of jobseekers' employment. These new rules no longer make it possible to keep applications as up to date as before the crisis.

On the one hand, the number of resident job seekers receiving full unemployment benefit increased by 2,765 people, or 37.1%, over one year, exceeding 10,000 people in May 2020. On the other hand, the number of beneficiaries of an unemployment measure decreased by 408 people, or 9.6%, compared to May 2019. Nevertheless, the number of new measures in May were reduced due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During the month of May 2020, employers reported 2,309 vacancies to the ADEM, which represents a decrease of 33.4% compared to May 2019. Compared to April 2020, however, the number of declared vacancies increased by 414, or 21.8%.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, as calculated by STATEC, stands at 7.0%.
