Salaried employment in Luxembourg rose by 0.8% in the fourth quarter of 2019 and by 3.6% over twelve months, according to Statec.
This increase in the fourth quarter has been attributed to job creation in administration and other public services (up 4.5% year-on-year), as well as in trade, transport, accommodation and catering (up 3.9%). These two branches accounted for 44% of salaried employment and half of net job creation between the fourth quarters of 2018 and 2019.
The favourable development of the administration and public service sectors primarily resulted from jobs related to central administration and social work activities without accommodation, whilst that of trade, transport, accommodation and catering activities was mainly related to retail trade and restaurants.
During this period, the number of cross-border workers again rose slightly faster than that of residents (up 4.5% compared to 2.9%). Among residents, the number of workers from the European Union (EU) increased by 1.9 %, while that of non-EU workers increased by 10.6%.
