Salaried employment in Luxembourg has risen by 0.8% in the third quarter of 2019 and by 3.7% over twelve months, according to Statec.

This increase in the third quarter has been attributed to job creation in administration and other public services (up 4.6% year-on-year), as well as in trade, transport, accommodation and catering (up 4.2%). These two branches accounted for 43% of salaried employment and 51% of net job creation between the third quarters of 2018 and 2019.

The favourable development of the administration and public service sectors primarily resulted from jobs related to central administration and social action for homeless youth, whilst that of trade, transport, accommodation and catering activities was mainly related to retail trade and restaurants.

During this period, the number of cross-border workers also rose slightly faster than that of residents (+4.6% compared to +3.0%). Among residents, the number of workers from the European Union increased by 2.0 %, while that of non-EU workers increased by 9.5%.
