The Luxembourg unemployment rate has fallen by 1.8% over the past year, bringing the current seasonally adjusted rate calculated by Statec to 5.4%.

The number of active resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM unemployment agency amounted to 15,670 as of 31 March 2019. Over one year, this represents a decrease of 286 persons, or 1.8%. Compared with February 2019, however, the number of resident jobseekers increased by 162.

Such an increase is unusual, as seasonal variations mean that the number of jobseekers usually drops between February and March. It can be explained by the registration of beneficiaries of the Social Inclusion Income (REVIS), following the entry into force of the new law in this area.

Nevertheless, the number of active non-resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 2,628 at the end of March 2019, a decrease of 1.8% compared to March 2018.

During the month of March 2019, the ADEM opened 2,507 new applications from resident jobseekers, an increase of 25% compared to March 2018.
In addition, 614 new applications from non-resident jobseekers were opened, which represents an increase of 109% from March 2018.

Meanwhile, the total number of beneficiaries of employment benefits in Luxembourg was 4,293 at the end of March 2019. Over one year, this represents a drop of 39 people, or 0.9%.

During the month of March 2019, employers reported 3,715 vacancies to the ADEM, which equated to 124 or 3.2% fewer posts than in March 2018.
