To mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Nazi occupation, Vianden is hosting a series of events from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 February 2025.

Vianden was the last town to be liberated by US troops on 12 February 1945 - five months after most of the rest of the country had been liberated.

The upcoming 80th anniversary programme in Vianden will kick off with on Wednesday 12 February 2025, with a historical presentation and a concert (Luxembourg Military Band) at Vianden Castle at 18:00.

Other confirmed highlights (at the time of writing) include:

- a conference about the shared history of Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, plus a concert (Netherlands Military Band), at Vianden Castle on Thursday 13 February at 18:00;

- five US reenactment camps (including reconstruction of a pontoon bridge) on Saturday 15 February, from 10:00 to 16:00;

- Vianden Liberation Ball, featuring 1930s, 1940s and rock'n'roll hits, at the LAREI cultural centre on Saturday 15 February, from 20:00 to 01:00. Tickets cost €5 at the door (no presale);

- a commemorative mass in the Trinitarian Church on Sunday 16 February, from 09:00 to 10:00, followed by a commemorative ceremony at 11:00 at the US Memorial "Op der Plank", in the presence of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, and a "wine of honour" reception at the community hall at 12:30;

- WW2 US vehicle parade, departing Place Vic Abens at 14:00 on Sunday 16 February;

- closing concert of the US Air Forces in Europe (SAFE) at Vianden Castle on Sunday 16 February at 19:00.
