On Monday 28 October 2024, Luxembourg's Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill, together with the President of the Regional Tourist Office of the Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg's Little Switzerland - and Mayor of Echternach, Carole Hartmann, inaugurated the first "comfort hiking trail" in the region at Echternach Lake.
This type of hiking trail is designed to offer increased comfort to the elderly, families with young children and people in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility.
The trail around Lake Echternach is 3.25 km with a 22-metre difference in altitude. Pink signs indicate the way. Further "comfort hiking trails" are being planned in the Mullerthal region and in other parts of the country. Two accessible hiking trails, already in place at Bissen and Remich, allow people with specific needs to fully enjoy nature.
At the inauguration, Minister Delegate Thill said: “As part of the “tourism for all” initiative, this new trail around Lake Echternach marks a further step in the government’s efforts to make tourism more inclusive and accessible, especially for those who want to enjoy outdoor activities and who have an increased need for comfort when hiking.”
Mayor Hartmann said: "On the one hand, the comfort hiking trail ideally complements the existing infrastructure offering adapted for people with special needs at the recreation centre around Lake Echternach. On the other hand, the new trail will further strengthen the visibility and tourist appeal of the City of Echternach and the entire region."
As part of the inauguration of the new trail, a demonstration of electric wheelchair mobility aids took place, which can be borrowed free of charge from Rentabike Mëllerdall at the youth hostel in Echternach.
