The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall (Mullerthal nature and geopark) has announced that it is organising various activities in Beaufort on Saturday 16 July 2022 as part of International Bat Night.

In Luxembourg, there are a total of eighteen species of bats, of which only the aquatic bat is not considered endangered. It is therefore important to actively protect bats and provide as much information as possible about these animals. With the aim of raising awareness among as wide an audience as possible, the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats, or EUROBATS, launched the first European Bat Night 25 years ago and has been organising this event across Europe annually ever since.

In this context, the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall is inviting the public to take part in this year's Bat Night activities (for all ages) in the inner courtyard of Beaufort Castle on 16 July from 18:00. A rally for children, the possibility of building a nesting box for bats, a conference on the biology and protection of bats in Luxembourg and a "bat walk" (a walk in the footsteps of bats) are on the agenda. Participation is free and attendees have the chance to win two prizes.

Programme

From 18:00: children's activities (for four- to fourteen-year-olds), including a rally, various games, building a bat nesting box and making seed bombs from nocturnal flowers; various information stands will be present on site, in particular on the theme of a welcoming garden for bats and insects, as well as on bat nesting boxes.

19:30: national bat coordinator, Jacques Pir, will give a lecture on the ecology, threats and protection of bats. In addition, an overview will be given on bats and forest management.

22:30: a bat walk, led by Jacques Pir, during which visitors will receive tips on the visual and acoustic observation of these nocturnal animals.

As part of international Bat Night, the goal of Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall is to disseminate information about local bat species and their habitats, in order to break down prejudices that individuals may have towards bats.
