The City of Luxembourg has announced that there will be no Christmas markets in the capital this winter due to the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases recently.
Due to the pandemic, the College of Alderman of the City of Luxembourg decided to cancel the Christmas markets and winter events which had been planned as part of the "Winterlights 2020" programme. The markets had been scheduled to take place from 20 November 2020 to 3 January 2021.
Lydie Polfer, Mayor of Luxembourg City, explained: “More than ever, we must be vigilant and [follow] the barrier gestures and health measures in force. The organisation of a Christmas market could jeopardise the health of residents and visitors to the city".
Nevertheless, the capital will still be lit up and decorated in a festive manner this winter.
