On Monday at Roland Garros, venue for the 2018 French Open tennis championships, Luxembourg's two representatives in the singles draws - Gilles Muller and Mandy Minella - lost their first-round matches.
Gilles Muller (aged 35, ranked #34), the tournament's 29th seed in the men's singles, lost 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 3-6 to Latvia's Ernestes Gulbis (aged 29, ranked #160 and a tournament qualifier) on Court 8 in a match that lasted eight minutes short of three hours. Ultimately, Muller's defeat can be blamed at his 49 unforced errors, compared to 39 by his opponent.
Meanwhile, Many Minella (aged 32, ranked #286) was playing in her first grand slam event since becoming a mother last year. Up against Maria Sakkari (aged 22, ranked #38) from Greece, she lost 6-7, 2-6 on Court 15 in just under two hours.
