34 year-old Gilles Muller from Reckange-sur-Mess in Luxembourg ended 2017 ranked #25 in the world thanks to two wins on the ATP tour - in Australia and The Netherlands - but will start the Australian Open ranked #28, and the 23rd seed.
His drop in rankings was due to his defeat in his first tournament of the year, in Brisbane, in early January, coupled with his performance last week in attempting to retain his Sydney title. While he did succeed in defeating Australain John Millman 7-6, 6-4, he succumbed to Benoit Paire in the quarter-finals.
He opens his account at the Australian Open against 27 year-old Federico Delbonis from Argentina, ranked #67.
