On Sunday, Luxembourg's Mandy Minella, fresh from her success in Saturday's doubles final, was playing in the final of the Singles Championship at the Kirkland Tennis Tournament in Washington, USA, with a prize fund of $50,000, against 3rd seed Nicole Gibbs (USA).
On the road to the final, Mandy Minella defeated Sofia ARVIDSSON (SWE), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round, then Jovana JAKSIC (SRB), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round. In the quarter-final she overcame the challenge of the 4th seed Jessica PEGULA (USA), 7-5, 6-4; and in the semi-final defeated Antonia LOTTNER (GER) 6-2, 7-5.
In Sunday's final, the 29 year-old from Esch-sur-Alzette (ranked #206 in the world and seeded 10th for this event) overcame her opponent, 22 year-old American Nicole Gibbs (ranked #143) in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
This win, in 2 hours and 2 minutes, plus her triumph in the doubles final on Saturday, is a very positive outcome for Luxembourg's tennis star heading into her home tournament at Kockelscheuer this coming week.
