Luxembourg's statistical institute, STATEC, has reported that salaried employment increased by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2024 and by 0.9% over one year.

In its report published on Thursday 3 October 2024, STATEC noted that growth in salaried employment continues to progress at a slow pace: in the second quarter of 2024, there was a moderate increase of 0.2% compared to the first quarter. Over one year, the increase was below 1% (0.9% in the second quarter of 2024, compared to 2.4% in the second quarter of 2023).

Trade, transport, accommodation and catering (0.6%) as well as administration and other public services (1.1%) showed the strongest quarterly increases compared to the first quarter of 2024. On the other hand, the sectors of industry and construction have again recorded a decrease in the number of employees in the second quarter of 2024.

Trade, transport, accommodation and catering (1.9% over one year), as well as administration and other public services (+3.9% over one year) also showed the strongest quarterly increases in year-on-year comparison.

For trade and transport, the favourable development reportedly stems from air transport auxiliary services. As for public administration and other public services, the services of the central administration recorded the most favourable growth.

Over one year, the construction sector saw a sharp decrease of 5.4% in the number of employees. The biggest job losses were in residential and non-residential building construction.

In the second quarter of 2024, the number of resident employees increased more than that of cross-border workers (+0.3% for residents versus +0.1 for cross-border workers compared to the first quarter). While the number of French cross-border employees continues to increase, the number of Belgian and German cross-border workers decreased compared to the previous quarter.
