Luxembourg has ranked second in the newly launched Sustainable Passport Index (SPI).

The Visas for Future Sustainable Passport Index (SPI) 2024 ranks 180 passports based on the country's environmental policies.

According to Visas for Future, the Grand Duchy "excels in environmental performance, ranking second overall due to its robust air quality, comprehensive waste management and significant efforts in preserving biodiversity". It added that the the country, in its environmental policy, "has implemented strict regulations on industrial emissions and has invested heavily in renewable energy sources. Luxembourg's policies promoting sustainable agriculture and forest conservation further enhance its environmental standing."

With a score of 75, Luxembourg ranked only behind Estonia (75.3), which topped the index "due to its strong performance in sustainable forest management and low levels of pollution". Germany (74.6) rounded out the top 3, with "its strong focus on renewable energy and efficient waste management".

Vietnam, Pakistan and Laos ranked bottom three for the least sustainable passports.

The study evaluates sustainability in the following areas: climate change policies, environmental health and ecosystem vitality. Visas for Future noted that it uses these factors (three main areas and their subcategories) to collectively determine the overall sustainability of a country.
