On Tuesday 12 April 2022, the United States (US) released the 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, including for Luxembourg.

Required by US law, the 2021 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices document the status of human rights and worker rights in 198 countries and territories around the world.

US Ambassador to Luxembourg, Thomas Barrett, commented: "Defending human rights and fundamental freedoms is central to who the United States is as a country, just as it is innate to Luxembourg. I am grateful to the Government of Luxembourg for continuing to uphold high standards of human rights. Now more than ever, as we have witnessed gross human rights violations being perpetrated by Russia in Ukraine, all democratic countries must do their utmost to defend the values of the free world and continue to work to improve democracy, in their own country and beyond".

Like the previous year, there were no reports of significant human rights abuses in 2021 in Luxembourg. The report also found that the Luxembourg Government had "mechanisms in place to identify and punish officials who may commit human rights abuses".

The 2021 Luxembourg Human Rights Report is available at: https://www.state.gov/reports/2021-country-reports-on-human-rights-practices/luxembourg/

According to the US Embassy in Luxembourg, the report does not attempt to catalogue every human rights-related incident nor is the report an effort by the US government to judge others. Instead, the report is factual in nature and focusses on the current year.
