On Thursday 17 March 2022, Luxembourg's statistics agency Statec reported that 29% of the resident population has been affected by acts of violence in the last 5 years.
This accounts the victimisation of sexual, physical and psychological violence in Luxembourg. The results are part of the safety survey conducted by Statec in 2019/2020.
According to the report, the number of people reporting having experienced violence has increased by almost a third since the last survey in 2013.
In the 2019/2020 survey, approximately one out of two residents declared that they have been exposed to psychological violence during their life, which means having been the victim of acts such as:
- “stalking”, i.e. the observation and insistent pursuit by another person;
- moral or sexual harassment in different contexts (in the street, at work, at school or in the family);
- the relational influence in the couple (such as, for example, control of the comings and goings and of the social interactions of the partner).
Over the past five years, a quarter of the population reports having suffered at least one of these forms of psychological aggression.
During the same period, physical violence affected more than one in ten people. This refers to all kinds of physical attacks, such as blows or other similar forms of physical aggression, burns or cuts or threats with a weapon.
Acts of sexual violence, which have affected nearly 6% of the population over the past 5 years, include rape and attempted rape, unwanted touching and exhibitionist behavior.
