On Tuesday 8 March 2022, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Luxembourg's statistics agency Statec reported 43,215 cases of women aged 16 to 74 experiencing physical, sexual and/or psychological assault over the past twelve months.

The figures are from the Statec Survey on Safety, carried out in 2020, in collaboration with the Grand Ducal Police.

About one in four women reported having experienced at least one form of sexual violence in her lifetime (including unwanted touching, exhibitionistic behaviour, rape or attempted rape, and degrading sexual acts).

29,898 women, equivalent to 12% of women in Luxembourg aged 16 to 74, also reported having experienced serious forms of sexual violence during their lifetime, i.e. rape or attempted rape.

Nearly 4% (10,549) of women reported physical attacks in the last twelve months.

15% of women reported being victims of psychological violence and having suffered acts such as:

  • “stalking”, i.e. the observation and insistent pursuit by another person;
  • moral or sexual harassment in different contexts (in the street, at work, at school or in the family);
  • the relational influence in the couple (such as, for example, control of the comings and goings and of the social interactions of the partner).

In the report, Statec also recalled that the public helpline against domestic violence, both for women and men, is available via telephone: 2060 1060 (every day, from 12:00 to 20:00) or via email: info@helpline-violence.lu. Further information is also available online at www.helpline-violence.lu.
