A study by Confused.com has found that drivers in Luxembourg City have the fifth highest chance of experiencing a GPS signal drop and slow internet among European cities, with a navigation failure score of 82.77 out of 100.
The navigation failure score was evaluated from total number of GPS satellite failures, internet download speeds and internet latency within each city between January and April 2021.
While Luxembourg City experienced just eleven GPS signal failures overall (95% fewer than Helsinki, Finland (254) in the top spot), it recorded the highest percentage (0.44%) of high internet latency (above 200 millisecond response time), which is known to affect digital map applications.
With a score of 91.97 out of 100, drivers in Sofia, Bulgaria, are most likely to experience GPS signal loss and slow mobile internet, earning the top spot on the navigation failure score. Sofia also recorded the highest percentage (0.85%) of slow download speeds across Europe.
Barcelona, Spain, has the second highest navigation failure score at 90.83 out of 100.
Paris, France, is the only European city which scored a perfect 0 on all factors analysed, meaning that drivers are least likely to lose GPS or internet signal while driving.
"Driving somewhere new can be a stressful experience even if you do have access to Maps or other navigation apps. Whether you are driving abroad or taking a new route in town, it’s key to make sure you are fully prepared before the trip. Do your research to grasp a basic understanding of your route so you’re not relying on your map app to get you there”. commented Alex Kindred, Car Insurance expert at Confused.com .“If you are driving in a new country - it is important to make sure you have the right insurance for your trip. If you only have standard third-party cover to drive in Europe, it might be worth considering paying to upgrade your insurance".
