According to a new Eurobarometer survey on social issues, 91% of Luxembourg residents considered a social Europe to be important to them personally.

The European Commission published yesterday a new Eurobarometer survey on social issues. This comes ahead of the adoption of the action plan on the European Pillar of Social Rights (the Social Pillar).

The survey revealed that a social Europe was a top priority for the vast majority of European citizens; nine out of ten Europeans (88%) considered a social Europe to be important to them personally. At 91%, this rate was even higher in Luxembourg.

For Luxembourg residents who took part in the survey, the most important aspects for the future of Europe were social protection, education, training and lifelong learning, health care, equal opportunities and a minimum wage. One-third of respondents felt that the European Union (EU) should act in these priority areas to prepare the future of Europe.

The Social Pillar, presented in 2017, defines 20 key rights and principles for a strong social Europe. The action plan is aimed at contributing to a fair, inclusive and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and to strong long-term social ambition.

A total of 27,213 interviews were carried out online between 20 November and 21 December 2020 across the EU. In Luxembourg, a total of 529 online interviews were carried out from 3 to 21 December 2020.
