On Sunday 15 June 2025, the City of Luxembourg is hosting "Encounters Without Borders," a sports and intercultural day taking place from 10:00 to 19:00 at the Boy Konen Sports Complex in Luxembourg-Cessange.
The programme includes football and beach volleyball tournaments, cycling activities at the Boy Konen Bike Park, and a friendly intercultural festival combining music, dance, games and entertainment for the whole family.
This day, organised in collaboration with the CLAE (Liaison Committee of Foreigners' Associations), focuses on sports and intercultural exchanges and reflects the city's commitment to fostering the integration of the many nationalities present (throughout the city) through sports and culture. The capital city currently has over 71% of citizens of foreign origin and 169 different nationalities.
The official opening, attended by members of the College of Mayor and Aldermen, will take place at 12:00.
New for 2025: Greater emphasis on inclusive sports
For the 2025 edition of "Rencontres sans frontières," the focus will be on inclusive sports, with an expanded range of activities for people with special needs. Among the main new features, several disciplines such as cycling, pétanque and curling will be integrated in partnership with specialised organizations. In addition, a graffiti workshop for young people will be organised in collaboration with local artists.
Football tournaments for ages 6 and up
The 8-a-side football tournament is open to men and women and will be played with teams of ten players, including seven outfield players, one goalkeeper, and two reserve players. To promote cultural diversity, each team will include a maximum of four players of the same nationality. This intercultural tournament offers a unique opportunity to gather with other athletes who share the same passion for sport.
Matches will last between 10 and 20 minutes; the exact duration will be determined after registration closes. Teams of fewer than nine players will be supplemented by individual registrations. Several tournaments will be held in different age categories: 6-8 years, 9-11 years, 12-14 years, 15-17 years, and 18+.
Beach Volleyball Tournament for ages 13 and up
The beach volleyball tournament is open to men, women and youth ages 13 and up. Teams will consist of five players, including four on the court and one reserve. Each team will include a maximum of three players of the same nationality. Teams of fewer than five players will be supplemented by individual registrations.
Activities for all ages at Bike Park Boy Konen
Numerous cycling activities are also planned starting at 12:00 at Bike Park Boy Konen: Table-Line, Enduro-Track, North-Shore, Pump-Track and BMX-Track courses. Registration will take place on site the same day starting at 11:00. Bikes will be made available to participants who did not bring their own but still wish to participate, while supplies last. The minimum age is 10 years old.
This year, the bike workshop will also offer races for children ages 5 and up, as well as a balance bike course for toddlers. Bikes and balance bikes will be available, subject to availability.
A day for the whole family
Throughout the day, various activities will be offered for all ages: workshops and sports demonstrations, music and dance performances from the participating communities, as well as activities and events dedicated to children. In addition, numerous food stalls will offer spectators and participants the opportunity to discover culinary specialties from different countries and experience an exceptional culinary journey.
